P1
THE PUNISHER:
There are lots of shots of different types, and makes of guns and bullets. There’s a lot of play with explosions, showing that the program will most likely have a lot of gun action, and/or action in general. The whole sequence is in black and white, this connects to the issue of right and wrong. Black and white is seen as a good way to show contrast. Black and white can relate to contrasts like good or bad, right or wrong, good or evil in lots of films and TV shows. The shows name is what the main character is called. As his name suggests, he punishes people, but a big question throughout the show is if it’s right/fair for him to pick and choose who dies or not.
There is a lot of shots of gun smoke, these could be seen as Rorschach. Rorschach is a type of mental help procedure. It’s used to help those who are mentally ill or helps to find out if they are. The whole connection to mentally ill/challenged images, connects to the main character, who struggles with mental problems as his loved ones were killed and how he resorted to killing or “punishing”. Toward the end, all the images of guns that we’ve seen form together to create the punishers symbol, being a skull. The skull symbolizing death and connecting that symbol of death with guns hints towards how people might die.
GAME OF THRONES:
The first shots are of a burning bright orb with metal bands rotating around it. The metal has various metal symbols on it. This could symbolize the time setting. As it looks and sounds like metal forging and the symbols like medieval/historic. We then see a world setting, an open space world with various cities. In each city, there are different buildings. All the cities have their names by them as well as a world map. In the cities, the buildings rise and are made of clockwork like machinery. This shows the rising power of these locations. The whole look at the world map also shows how big the TV show is. The show has lots of characters and locations, the opening scene represents how big it is. At the end, you have the name of the show surrounded by four emblems, representing groups/clans of people in the show. It tells us there are four main areas/set of characters.
SKYFALL:
The title sequence is set after James Bond is shot in the top left of his chest. Throughout the scene, there are lots of transitions but going through what seems like a shot wound. They show James Bond’s body as a shadow, a board and other images. In each one, there is the reference to blood and the hole, and they use it to transition into the next scene. Every shot has a small reference to parts of the film. There’s many references to a certain house with deer statues outside, and James Bond’s young face underneath the house. When you finish the film, toward the end you find out it’s the house where his parents were killed and where he hid in the basement. Then it shows the same shot but with James Bond’s older face, representing that he never left the basement, but the killer that is James Bond did. He changed. There’s Chinese dragons, to represent when he goes to China in the film. There’s lots of Skulls and gravestones/yards dotted about. A lot of imagery of death. There’s also a very clever shot of the name of the character M just before a tombstone to represent the fact that the character dies in the film.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER:
Most of the sequence is in black and white. They use the black and white to contrast good and evil a lot. There’s a few images of the main villain’s logo in black and Captain Americas logo in white. They use the black and white to make silhouettes. They use the silhouettes to make mysterious images. It can start of with a black screen, and white shapes appear, you have to work out what image they’re making and sometimes have hidden images in it. They very occasionally have bits of red. For example on the character the winter soldier, the star on his arm glows red, either showing the small bit of good that’s still inside him or emphasizes his importance as the character he is. The red shows power and importance. The red appears for both main characters.
